Maruti Baleno had a forgettable run in India the first time it came out as a sedan. Owing largely to general perception that Maruti cars are only good as long as they are cheap and small, the Baleno sedan had a disastrous innings in India. It failed more because Maruti was unable to shake off the perception that it can make only small cars suited for the average Indian car buyer. However, after many years, Maruti has decided to bring back the Baleno on to the Indian roads. This time, the maker has played it smart by introducing it as a hatchback and not as a sedan. Here is a closer look at the all-new Baleno hatchback.

Price – When it comes to pricing the cars competitively, Maruti gets it right almost all the time. This holds true in the case of the Baleno hatch as well. This premium car is competitively priced between 4.99 and 8.11 lakh rupees. It would be tough to ignore the Baleno this time.

Features – The hatch comes with several firsts. It is the first car in India to get the Apple CarPlay infotainment system, which offers the best in car experience for iPhone. This feature allows the driver to control all the multimedia functions through voice commands.

The Baleno hatch comes with ample space inside the cabin, and thanks to its 2520 mm wheelbase, the rear seat passenger will have enough legroom for a comfortable journey. The boot space is 339 litres, which is quite good to hold the luggage of the entire family.

Variants and enginesMaruti Baleno is available in four trims – Sigma, Delta, Alpha and Zeta – in both petrol and diesel engines. The petrol variants run on a 1.2L, 4-cylinder petrol engine, which can generate a maximum power of 83 bhp and a peak torque of 115 Nm. The engine is mated to either a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT automatic gearbox. It returns a fuel economy of 21.4kmpl (ARAI certified). The diesel variants run on the familiar Fiat-sourced, 1.3L, 4-cylinder Multi-jet engine capable of delivering a maximum power of 74 bhp and peak torque of 190 Nm. It is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and returns a stunning mileage of 27.39 kmpl (ARAI certified), which is a best-in-segment feature.

Maruti is selling this premium hatch through its premium NEXA outlets. Available in seven vibrant colours, the Baleno comes loaded with comfort features and many standard safety features like front dual airbags, seatbelts with pre-tensioners and force limiters, Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).

Launched on 26 October, this car shows all the signs of being a potential top seller.
